Reimagining Biblical Politics

What scripture says about public life and why it matters

Dr Michael Rhodes

During our university years, my wife Rebecca and I sensed a call to participate in helping the church hear and respond to God’s heart for the economically marginalized. One of the great privileges of our life together has been the gift of being involved in holistic mission and Christian community development efforts in Kenya, South Memphis, and, today, in South Auckland. But if you’d asked us 18 years ago what this calling had to do with politics, I’m not sure we would have understood the question. We were excited about “God’s kingdom,” but we hadn’t really grappled with just how political that language of “kingdom” really is. For the most part, I think we hoped to avoid the mucky, messy world of “earthly politics.”

Yet trying to follow Jesus’s call on our life has made politics unavoidable. We’ve faced political questions at every turn—asking how our church should welcome people across the lines that divide us or best care for the needs of the body; being invited to join residents’ associations in their attempts to get speed bumps or security cameras; making decisions about school for our kids and being invited to serve on the school board; deciding to partner with local businesses to help our neighbours find jobs; wrestling with whether to join other brothers and sisters in reaching out to an elected official, marching in protest, or writing letters to the local newspaper (deciding to do so in some cases, and not to do so in others); navigating what to do when our neighbours discovered their rental was owned by a slumlord or were experiencing domestic violence; and, of course, trying to figure out how to love our brothers and sisters in the church with whom we have serious, substantial political disagreements . . . all in a seasons when our community was being rocked by a series of local and national political events.

That’s why I’ve spent the last few years researching how Scripture might offer God’s people resources for our lives as political disciples. That research has now culminated in a postgraduate course at Carey Baptist College on the Bible and Politics, a new book Reimagining Biblical Politics: What Scripture Says About Public Life and Why It Matters, a podcast season on Reimagining Biblical Politics produced through the Baptist Podcast Network, and a four-part webinar with the Carey Centre for Lifelong Learning.

These resources were designed to help Christians and church leaders linger in the strange, startling, diverse, beautiful world of biblical politics. A bit like the kids in the Narnia books, I invite us to “walk through the wardrobe” into this strange world so that we can return from Scripture better equipped to discern what faithful political discipleship looks like in our own lives. The book and podcast not only include discussions of Scripture, they culminate in resources for helping God’s people answer these questions together, even when we are deeply divided on a number of political issues.

I’m grateful that Carey’s commitment to integrative, applied theology that matters for the life of the church has given me the space to explore these topics. If you’re interested in an approach to following Jesus in public and political life that is more fully rooted in the good news that the Lord reigns and calls us to live out his reign and way in every area of life, I hope you find these resources helpful for you in your own journey.
