About the Certificate in Christian Leadership (Micro-credential)
There is a pressing need for quality, accessible, local Christian leadership training that ensures the effective and safe operation of churches and faith-based communities in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We are responding to that need by offering an NZQA-accredited micro-credential, Certificate in Christian Leadership.
This course introduces you to the theology and practice of Christian leadership. It gives careful attention to biblical accounts of leadership, with a particular focus on human participation in God’s leadership. You are exposed to a range of historical and contemporary models of leadership. You will engage with a range of practices critical to leadership in Aotearoa today. You will be equipped with the foundational knowledge, skills, practices and posture to lead faithfully and fruitfully in the context where you are called to serve.
You will be required to submit assignments. You will spend two hours a week at the evening session and can expect to commit up to a further seven hours a week to reading and preparing for lectures and assignments.
You will be taught by an ensemble cast of Carey’s world-class scholar-practitioners. They’ll each provide in-depth biblical and practical training from their own areas of expertise, enabling you to discover practical solutions to the leadership challenges you are facing in your context.
Course Information
This micro-credential is a Level 5 course of 15 credits over 12 weeks. Delivery includes weekly online lectures. Topics covered will include:
- Definitions of leadership, power, and manaakitanga
- Biblical understandings of God as leader
- Our calling as participants in God’s leadership
- The impact of the fall and rebellion on leadership
- Looking to Jesus: the upside down kingdom and leadership
- The role of the Spirit: empowering and leading the family of God
- The character and integrity of the leader: understanding ourselves
- Leadership as caring for others: the power of flourishing
- Developing cultural intelligence: leading in the midst of difference
- Discerning strategy: how communities listen to the Spirit
- Building teams and collaboration
- Navigating through conflict
Assessments
In your course you will be given three assessment tasks. These may be a combination of online tasks, online forum participation, quizzes, creative assignments, and/or written tasks and essays. These assessments are spread over the 17-week semester and are uploaded via our online learning portal—Carey Online.
You will be given resources to use and can also access our library resources.
Graduate Outcomes
The Certificate in Christian Leadership will equip you to:
- Outline a foundational biblical and theological understanding of Christian leadership.
- Describe how a foundational understanding of Christian leadership might inform Christian leadership practices to discern direction and to lead and care for individuals and groups.
- Evaluate the implications of one’s working definition (and understanding) of Christian leadership on one’s own character, spirituality and leadership practices.
- Evaluate specific leadership approaches or ministry practices using insights from a biblical and theological understanding of Christian leadership.
- National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), with a minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, and
- a minimum of 8 credits in English at Level 2 or higher, 4 credits of which must be in reading and 4 credits in writing
- a grade of C or higher in each of 3 subjects in New Zealand University Entrance, Business and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations
- NCEA equivalence which can include NZQA Level 4 certificates in a similar discipline, or other NZQA Level 5 certificates in a different discipline.
