What is CareyLocal?

Learn, grow, and be transformed – wherever you are!

CareyLocal is an exciting initiative designed to build biblical foundations for church volunteers, ministry and mission leaders, and anyone wanting to grow in their discipleship.

Courses include theology, biblical studies, pastoral care, and mission. Students will spend one evening a week in a cohort, learning with a Carey lecturer in a Level 5 course for credit. This way of learning allows students to participate in the learning together as a cohort, and engage with their teacher online. The teacher will guide students through material, provide opportunities for discussion and reflection, and facilitate wider conversations across the cohorts around the country.

Distance Student engaging with Lecturer
CareyLocal can be joined from your church site, someone’s home, or somewhere else in your community, wherever the cohort is located in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Students completing the course for credit will be required to submit assignments. They will spend two hours a week at the evening session and can expect to commit a further seven hours a week to reading and preparing for lectures and assignments. Students can choose to go on to complete a Certificate, Diploma, or even a Bachelors degree!

There are some limited places available for students to audit the course. They will spend two hours a week at the evening session and will be expected to commit time to reading and preparing for lectures. They will not be required to submit assignments and will not receive any NZQA credits for completing the course.

Studying with Carey will transform students from the inside out, deepen their understanding of the gospel, widen their perspective, and energise them to make a difference in their own community, as they engage in God’s mission.

What is study for credit?

Studying for credit is completing an NZQA-accredited course including all assessments. The course can then be credited towards an approved NZQA qualification. Students will spend two hours a week at the evening session, and can expect to commit a further seven hours a week to reading and preparing for lectures and assignments. In each course students will normally be given three assessment tasks. These can be a combination of online tasks, online forum participation, and/or written tasks and essays. These assessments are spread over the 17-week semester and are uploaded via our online learning portalCarey Online. Students will be given resources to use and are also expected to access our library resources.

What does auditing a course involve?

Auditing a course allows you to attend class with your cohort and gain access to course materials via CareyOnline. You are not required to complete any assessment items. If you wish to access Library resources you must pay for a subscription.

2024 CareyLocal Course

SEMESTER ONE: FEBRUARY-JUNE

Introduction to the Old Testament

Wednesday 7-9pm
Starts 28 February
Course Code: MB531
Michael Rhodes
Level 5 (15 credits)
This course dives deep into the wild, exciting, bewildering world of the Old Testament. While Christians often neglect this portion of their Bibles, the Old Testament was Jesus’s Bible and the Bible of the early church. The Spirit still speaks through these ancient texts, inviting us to grapple more deeply with God’s mission to the world, and helping us understand more fully the story that comes to its climax in Jesus. In the course, we will survey significant portions of the Old Testament, but we will also spend time gaining the skills we need to understand the different genres that make up this magnificent portion of Scripture. Students will walk away with a better sense of what’s in the Old Testament, as well as specific skills to help them interpret the Old Testament for themselves going forward.

Intro to the Old Testament has been an elightening course. It brought clarity and life to the whole of scripture, making it much easier to read, understand, and connect with. If you want to grow more in your relationship with our God, then enrol and enjoy!

Megan Linday — Student
Introduction to the Old Testament has been eye-opening. Each lecture looks at part of the OT in a way that I hadn’t considered before: from creation, to the law, to the Psalms, even to thr Gospel found in the prophets. Michael’s passion and enthusiasm for this subject really makes it come alive and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I think the Old Testament is absolutely mesmerising, and I love wrestling with it together with others. So the opportunity to join students in reading the Bible as God’s address summoning us to an intimate relationship with God and a life of kingdom engagement in the world is just incredible.
