Thank you for celebrating with us

Friday 20 – Saturday 21 March 2026

This month we celebrated 100 years of God’s faithfulness to Carey Baptist College. Held over two days at our brand‑new Penrose campus, this special weekend featured times of worship, plenary talks, workshops led by current Carey faculty, a panel conversation with past and present principals, and a special centenary chapel service. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped us celebrate this momentous occasion.

Centenary Celebration Videos

Below is a collection of recordings from our Centenary Celebration held in March 2026. These include main sessions, workshops, times of worship, and the closing chapel service from this two-day event.

Use chapters to navigate to particular sections within these videos.

Mihi and Welcome

The start of our Centenary Celebrations, this video includes the following:

  • Mihi and Welcome by Ray Totorewa and Paul Jones
  • a time of sung worship led by Sacha Olson, Michael Rhodes, Jonathan Robinson, Timothy Sze, and Jarrahmel Tanielu
  • a reading of Psalm 96 from Rebekah Cummins and Ruth Clarke
  • prayers from Mike Enright and Elizabeth Jones
  • message by Grace Chamberlain titled Let us review our diaries

A History of Six Locations

The recording Martin Sutherland’s plenary presentation titled A History in Six Locations. This video also includes a word of thanks and support of the college from National Council.

For 100 years and more NZ Baptists have intentionally trained leaders in Bible and theology. The nature of that training has evolved in line with the spaces, both real and virtual, that it has occupied. This is not a chronicle of buildings and physical addresses. Rather, it is the story of an evolving approach to theological education, underpinned by a constant missional vision – “the sixth site.”

“Say to this Mountain”

The recording Jonathan Robinson’s workshop titled “Say to this Mountain” – What Does Jesus Really Promise Us in Mark 11:23?

In Mark 11:23 Jesus promises his followers they can move mountains if they have faith in God. But have any of us ever done this? If not, do we lack faith? Or, if it is just hyperbole, what actual help are Jesus’ words in knowing what we can and should pray for? And what has any of this got to do with what is going on with Jesus and the Temple in Mark 11? In this session, Carey’s New Testament Lecturer, Jonathan Robinson, shares some of his research on how this verse has been interpreted, presents his own interpretation, and discusses the pastoral implications of how we read this promise of Jesus.

Tuning Our Hearts to the Psalms

This video is the plenary presentation by Michael Rhodes and Luke Kaa-Morgan titled Turning Our Hearts to the Psalms: Renewing Worship and Witness in Aotearoa.

Michael Rhodes, Luke Kaa-Morgan, and a variety of special guests explore the Psalms as a source for renewing the worship and witness of God’s people in this land. After considering the centrality of the Psalms to Christian worship, we hear examples of inter-cultural worship songs created out of the psalms and in the heart cultures and languages of Aotearoa, as well as reflections from those who wrote them on the process and power of seeking to tune our hearts to the psalms.

Worship and Principals’ Panel

The start of day two of our Centenary Celebrations, this video includes the following:

  • a time of sung worship led by Sacha Olson, Michael Rhodes, Jonathan Robinson and Jarrahmel Tanielu
  • a reading of Acts 17:22-28 from Levi Dyer
  • a message by Julie Chamberlain
  • the highly anticipated Principals’ Panel Conversation hosted by Reti Ah-Voa with Brian Smith, Paul Windsor, Charles Hewlett, John Tucker, and Paul Jones.

Baptist Ecclesiology and Human Flourishing

The recording of Christa McKirland’s workshop titled Baptist Ecclesiology and Human Flourishing.

Baptist ecclesiology fosters agency because it is grounded in covenant participation. The triune God invites persons into covenant relationship with God and one another, reflecting an agency-affirming vision of divine–human communion. Baptism embodies this invitation as the believer’s voluntary “yes” to God and the covenant community. Yet agency extends beyond baptism into shared discernment, mutual accountability, and covenant renewal at the Lord’s Supper. While rooted in Scripture, this vision resonates with social-scientific insights about human flourishing. Science-engaged theology—especially Basic Psychological Needs Theory—offers a lens for evaluating whether Baptist communal practices truly reflect the conviction that God desires the flourishing of our gathered communities.

Celebration Chapel Service

The conclusion of our two-day Centenary Celebrations, this video is of the Celebration Chapel Service which includes:

  • a time of sung worship led by Sacha Olson, Michael Rhodes, Jonathan Robinson and Jarrahmel Tanielu
  • prayers of intercession, confession and thanksgiving with Jarrahmel Tanielu, Kevin Park, and Lifang (Eva) Lan
  • a reading of Joshua 4:1-8, 20-24 from Chris Beales-White
  • Principal Paul Jones’ sermon titled Looking to the Future from
  • acknowledgments and poroaki to close the two-day celebrations
Kelvyn Fairhall and others

Stories of Faith and Formation

As part of Carey’s Centenary celebrations, we’re sharing stories from graduates across the decades—stories of calling, community, challenge, and transformation. These reflections offer a glimpse into how God has been at work through Carey and its people over the past 100 years.

We hope you enjoy reading these stories of transformation, and seeing how study at Bible college shaped and formed students for life beyond Carey.

Centenary Fundraising Campaign

God has been so faithful, and continues to be faithful. With a rich 100-year legacy behind us, as we look to the next 100, Carey Baptist College is proud to continue serving the Church in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Through high quality theological education and leadership training, Carey is firmly committed to invest in future generations of Christian leaders by equipping them for ministry, mission, and discipleship. And while the opportunities are amazing, the journey has not been without its challenges. As the college has traversed valleys and mountains over the last 100 years, one of the constants making it possible for Carey to play its part in supporting the mission of God has been supporters—supporters like you.

The world has changed significantly in the past 100 years, and continues to change quickly. Your support will ensure that we continue to graduate exceptional Christian leaders to guide the Church through these tumultuous times, leaders who can navigate complexity and fulfil the Great Commission (Matt 28). Will you donate to our Centenary Fundraising Campaign, and help us enable faith communities to flourish in the next 100 years?
