1970’s Reunion

Saturday 4-Monday 6 May 2024

A special reunion was held for those that studied at  NZ Baptist Theological College in Victoria Ave, Auckland in the 1970s.

It was a wonderful weekend; eating good food, worshipping together, celebrating and renewing friendships, listening and laughing to wonderful stories, sometimes crying over painful experiences, participating in inspiring seminars, being shocked by our response to modern day lectures, and so much more. We were thrilled by the turnout, the participation, and evidence that many left feeling good about their experience of College then and now.

Most of us are now in our 70’s or older. We all looked reasonably healthy for our age, but almost all had, or are having, issues, – grief and loss, stroke, cancer, relationship/marriage breakups, heart attack, family difficulties, ongoing health issues and so on, yet those issues even though talked about were not all consuming, rather it was faith and love and hope which shone through in spite of those things. There was a softness, no hint of competitiveness or arrogance, a depth and maturity in Christian walk, an openness and a realness which was strangely endearing.

We asked a few questions of some students from the 1970s to reflect on their time at college and subsequent years. Check them out below and see if you share any of the same memories.

“At Carey we believe that the God of mission is at work in the world by the Spirit to renew people and places in Christ. Our calling is to equip Christian leaders with the convictions, competencies, and capacity to participate in that mission, bringing gospel renewal in churches and communities across Aotearoa and around the world.”
