Place-Based Learning
These vocational and church formation courses are flexible and individually tailored for a wide range of contexts—from church ministries to community organisations and workplaces —and aim to help you grow as a healthy Christian disciple and practitioner.
Rather than stepping away from ministry to study, Carey’s place-based learning lets you learn where you serve. You’ll reflect theologically on your own ministry experiences, supported by a supervisor and by Carey— helping you grow in wisdom, confidence, skills, and faith as you serve God and your community.

How It Works
Each course brings together two key components:
1. Placement
You’ll spend 100, 200, or 400 hours in a church, community, or workplace ministry context — ideally one where you already serve or work.
Common examples include:
- Youth ministry
- Children’s ministry
- 24-7 Youth
- Chaplaincy
- Community ministry
- Prayer or pastoral care ministry
- Home group leadership
- Ministry team leadership
2. Theological Reflective Practice
You’ll engage in 50, 100, or 200 hours of guided online learning through Carey.
This includes:
- Reading and activities from online modules
- Reflection with a supervisor
- Interaction in online forums
- Theological reflection assignments
Together, these experiences help you connect your study with your real-world ministry and personal formation.
Levels of Study
Each level focuses on a different aspect of your development:
- Level 5: Explore your sense of call, deepen self-understanding, and form healthy, holistic habits.
- Level 6: Reflect on your ministry and community context with growing insight.
- Level 7: Integrate your learning and practice as a Christian leader.
Why Study This Way
Rather than stepping away from ministry to study, Carey’s place-based model lets you learn where you serve, integrating your learnings with your life and ministry, and equipping you to grow as a healthy Christian disciple and practitioner.
Are you a Christian leader who wants to grow in identity, capacity, and skill for transformative ministry leadership?
Your local context matters, and our place-based approach takes that seriously, allowing you to train in your church and community—all as part of studying at Carey. Carey’s ministry and leadership programmes are available onsite or online, offering flexibility to study while you continue serving.
Are you wanting to be equipped for intercultural mission work?
Our Certificate and Diploma in Intercultural Practice provide a unique opportunity for followers of Jesus to journey together with others, while being formed for participation in God’s mission, wherever that may be and whatever form it might take.
