The Youth Ministry ‘Discovery Internship’ combines distance learning, block courses, and hands-on experience that helps students gain foundational knowledge and skills for ministry with youth – all based in your home church.
Students who complete the Discovery Internship will be awarded the Certificate in Christian Studies.
This is an NZQA qualification (subject to approval). These courses can be cross-credited to other Carey NZQA qualifications if the student decides to continue on with study at Carey.
The Discovery Internship Programme is made up of these Courses:
Discovery Day and Foundations of Youth Ministry ( 2 x Onsite Block courses)
Mission of God (Online Distance)
Contextual Theological Praxis (Practical Interning)
This is usually completed in one year.
Taught in two block courses in Auckland the Discovery Day & Foundations of Youth Ministry will introduce you to ideas and practices that are fundamental to youth ministry in Aotearoa New Zealand.
You’ll begin the journey of thinking theologically, sociologically, and philosophically about youth ministry, develop practical skills for ministry with youth, as well as engaging with a range of recent scholarship that highlights various approaches to, and ethos of youth ministry.

The Discovery Retreat is an opportunity to touch base, learn some more about ministry, and to reflect on your year. You’ll also spend some time with your Mission of God lecturer (George Wieland).
The retreat is normally held in Auckland.

The Discovery Internship is a twenty hour per week commitment – though some weeks will require more than others. This commitment will involve approximately ten hours of practical serving, eight hours of reading and coursework, and two hours of supervision and reflection.
The cost for this programme is $3,956.00 incl. GST.
This covers course fees, FYM textbooks, Block course and retreat accommodation and food, ministry coaching, a regional training day, and some other BYM initiatives throughout the year.
