Director of the Carey Centre for Lifelong Learning
Dr Mike Crudge started as the first Director of the new Carey Centre for Lifelong Learning in February 2016. This is a church-leaders facing serving and resourcing role set up to enhance the way Carey continues to support church leaders throughout their ministry endeavours. This role enables Mike to hook into part of his passion for the future of the church by working for church leaders throughout the country.
Mike completed a PhD in Communication Studies in 2013 through AUT (Auckland University of Technology). His thesis is called “The disconnected church: a critical examination of the communication of the Christian church in New Zealand.” His research interest is in the area of mission and church engagement within New Zealand society, and the consideration that mission is a form of communication.
This is the second time Mike has been on staff at Carey, the first was for five years from 2004 where for three years he travelled around the country visiting distance students, church leaders and congregations, and then for two years looking after the Field Education courses and facilitating ministry training internships.
After that he was on the pastoral staff team at Oxford Terrace Baptist Church in central Christchurch for six years, which included four years in the post-earthquake context. Mike was also on the pastoral staff at Graceway Baptist Church in Auckland after graduating from Carey’s Pastoral Leadership track in 2002.
Prior to all of this Mike spent his time focused on electronic engineering working in research and development within the telecommunications industry in Wellington.
Mike considers Motueka to be his home town, and his favourite bit of New Zealand is the Abel Tasman National Park where he can be found each summer – he’s even published a photographic souvenir book of the popular Abel Tasman Coast Track.
Mike is married to Geraldine and they are the proud parents of Samuel.
Mike occasionally blogs about issues to do with communication, church, and society at MikeCrudge.com
