Elliot Rice serves as Co-Senior Pastor at Papanui Baptist Church in Christchurch, leading alongside his wife Sarah. He is one of our Carey graduates, having completed the Pastoral Leadership track in 2015, and his Master of Applied Theology in 2017—a thesis engaging the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar.
The Rices lead with the conviction that the Holy Spirit invites the church to participate in his upside-down kingdom in our locations and vocations. Prior to their move south, they co-led Carey’s Intermission programme in 2015 while living in an intentional Christian household in Manurewa. They are now seeking to live out their conviction in the context of a middle New Zealand Baptist church.
Elliot continues to be passionate about theological research and teaching. He is also involved in adjunct lecturing at Laidlaw College in Ōtautahi, Pathways College in Tauranga, and with South West Baptist Church’s Presence-Based Church courses. As well as enjoying books, he is a keen hockey player, occasional worship leader with his guitar, and a lover of tramping, movies, and sports. Prior to theology, he completed a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Auckland University. Elliot and Sarah are expecting their first child at the end of January 2020.
