The Youth Ministry ‘Discovery Internship’ combines distance learning, block courses, and hands-on experience that helps students gain foundational knowledge and skills for ministry with youth – all based in your home church.
Students who complete the Discovery Internship will be awarded a Carey Certificate of Christian Studies.
This is a non-NZQA qualification – however these courses can be cross-credited to other Carey NZQA qualifications if the student decides to continue on with study at Carey.
Discovery Courses are:
Discovery Day and Foundations of Youth Ministry ( 2 x Onsite Block courses)
Mission of God (Online Distance)
Contextual Theological Praxis (Practical Interning)
Taught in two block courses in Auckland the Discovery Day & Foundations of Youth Ministry will introduce you to ideas and practices that are fundamental to youth ministry in Aotearoa New Zealand.
You’ll begin the journey of thinking theologically, sociologically, and philosophically about youth ministry, develop practical skills for ministry with youth, as well as engaging with a range of recent scholarship that highlights various approaches to, and ethos of youth ministry.
Part One – 8 – 10 March 2018
Part Two 10 – 12 May 2018
More information can be found in the Carey Timetable
The Discovery Retreat is an opportunity to touch base, learn some more about ministry, and to reflect on your year. You’ll also spend some time with your Mission of God lecturer (George Wieland).
The retreat is normally held in Auckland.
Date: 17 – 19 August 2018

The great thing about this internship is it fits the needs of the intern and the church, allowing for part time youth ministry, part time work and part time study.
I would definitely recommend this for young people with leadership potential to serve and learn for one year in their local youth ministry
