Te Reo Māori

Language course for beginners

Semester One 2018

Nau mai. Piki mai. Kake mai. Haere mai.

The Te Reo Māori Language Course for Beginners is part of Carey’s commitment to the Bi-cultural journey.

The class is fun, interactive and focussed mainly on developing listening and speaking skills.

In the process of learning the basics of te reo Māori we discover who Māori are as tangata whenua (people of the land) and how relationships might be forged and faith shared. We will learn how to:

mihi – both formal and informal (greet people)

say pepehā (introduce ourselves and our families)

read and recite karakia (prayers)

sing waiata (including songs specifically composed for Carey Baptist College).

We will also learn whakatauki (appropriate proverbs for sermons and mihi), kiiwaha (idiomatic sayings), and about whānau (describing our family relationships), whenua (landmarks of Tamaki Makaurau)and marae (tikanga Māori).

Students of Te Ao Māori are particularly encouraged to attend. The two courses are designed to work together to reinforce your language learning.

Download the flyer and share it with your whanau and friends.

I taught Te Reo Māori at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School from 2006 to 2014 and also taught Te Reo Māori at Carey College in 2017. I am currently completing a Masters of Theology at Laidlaw College. I am really looking forward to meeting you all as we walk this language journey together. Let me leave with you with this whakatauki (proverb) from the Māori language.
