Murray was appointed youth pastor at Palmerston North Central Baptist Church in 1985 and served there until 1995. Overseeing a large team of volunteer youth workers caused a passion to develop in him for training and supporting youth leaders. In 1995 he was appointed as the National Leadership Training and Development Co-ordinator for NZ Baptist Youth Ministries, and given the responsibility of training youth workers throughout the country. Murray works for the YouthTRAIN Trust lecturing, developing resources and providing oversight for the trust.

Lai Liong has been a visiting lecturer for the Chinese Programme for nine years. He lectures in theology and ministry courses. He delivers Introduction to Theology, Adult Education, and People of God in 2009. Lai Liong has been a minister of the Auckland Chinese Methodist Church for more than 14 years.

Derek has a particular interest in marketplace and tentmaker approaches to cross-cultural mission. He served for many years as a Baptist pastor and on the mission field before spending more than a decade on the Carey staff team. Derek is married to Isa and they have four adult children and five grandchildren. He enjoys reading, music, gardening and writing.

Shireen joined the
staff in 2010 and assists the Principal in the management and oversight of
the college. Prior to
that, she was a research Project Manager running a large research project at
the University of Auckland. She completed a
Masters in Nutritional Science before working for a Government funding
agency. She is active on the OMF board and also involved in leadership in
her local church.
Shireen has a strong interest in mission, and especially in encouraging everyone
in finding their role
in God’s global mission. She enjoys walking her dog Max, reading, learning
new things, cooking and
entertaining.

Michael was converted to Christ out of the hippie drug counter culture. He and his family lived with and served the poor in the slums of Manila (the Philippines) for nine years. Michael has also pastored churches in urban settings: Dunedin, Melbourne (Australia) and Auckland. He has done study in theology, ethics and development studies at Oxford University (England) and has written two books: Move Out (1985) and Costly Mission (1996). For his M.Theol. He completed a critical study on the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Ruby, his wife, works with the poor of Auckland and they have three children . Michael enjoys Beethoven, the beach, and books.

Laurie teaches Church History and New Testament. Prior to joining Carey in 1990, Laurie had experience as a lawyer, minister and missionary. Laurie completed his doctoral thesis on the homosexual law reform debate in New Zealand which was published in 2002. His book on early church history titled Introducing Early Christianity was published by IVP America in 2004. He has recently had a book published on 'Making Sense of the Book of Revelation (Smith and Helwys, 2010). Laurie is married to Shona. He enjoys sailing, squash, tramping and kayaking.

Myk lectures at Carey Baptist College in Systematic Theology, Hermeneutics and Ethics, and has lectured in theology and ethics at the University of Otago, BCNZ (now Laidlaw College), and Pathways College. He has published articles on the Trinity, pneumatology, and soteriology, in such journals as Scottish Journal of Theology, New Blackfriars, Irish Theological Quarterly, Journal of Pentecostal Theology, and American Theological Inquiry. Along with lecturing Myk and his wife Odele are regular preachers of the Gospel, and provide leadership at their local church. They are also parents to two lovely children.
Research and supervision interests include: Trinity, Doctrine of God, Christology, Pneumatology, Soteriology, Reformed Theology, and Christian Ethics.

is on staff at Carey as a lecturer in applied theology and at St. Paul’s Symonds
Street where he works in the area of pastoral care and counselling. He received
his PhD in Theology from the University of Auckland in 2009 and his research
focused on designing and running a series of forgiveness courses that helped
adults to explore their relationships with their parents. He has published in
these areas.

is happily married to Angelika and they are the proud parents of Aimee.
Research and supervision interests include the broad areas of pastoral theology and pastoral care, and the specific areas of pastoral counselling, forgiveness, Object Relations Theory, and Mental Health.

At the November 2009 Baptist National Assembly, Charles was appointed the Principal of the college. Until this point he spent 5 years in the Director of Ministry Training role at Carey, responsible for co-ordinating, monitoring and assessing the non-classroom learning experiences of the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership students, as well as organising the Ministry Development Course for probationary pastors.
After 8 years of pastoring within the local church he has a real desire to see men and women well prepared for the service before them.
Charles studied pastoral care at the Bible College of New Zealand (now Laidlaw College), and received his MEd at Auckland University focusing on postmodern adult education. He is currently working on his DMin through the Australian College of Theology.
Charles is married to Joanne, who blogs about their special needs children here... His interests include playing tennis and squash, walking the Abel Tasman National Park, and the pedagogy of Paulo Freire.

Neroli joined the Carey staff in 2004. She assists the Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the administration of Carey’s School of Applied Theology and Mission. Prior to Carey she worked as Hospitality Manager at Bible College of New Zealand (now Laidlaw College), trained as a Spiritual Director and is involved in retreat leading. 2008 was a big year for her as she met and married Murray (who works as an electronics technician at the Unversity of Auckland)so is enjoying being involved in married life! Her interests include cooking, catering,walking,and professional house/pet sitting (the later two now not featuring in her life due to gaining a husband).

As the Director of the Chinese Programme, Joe is responsible for leadership, teaching and co-ordination of the Programme. He has recently completed his doctorate - his thesis focused on the impact of ancient elitism on the ethical issues in 1 Corinthians. Before coming to New Zealand, Joe had been a senior electronic engineer, editor of a Christian publishing house and co-ordinator of Mandarin ministry in Sheffield (UK). Joe is married to Christine. They have two children, Hannah and Jenny. He enjoys ball games, tramping, and playing the flute.

Sam was Associate Pastor (Youth/Young Adults) for 5 years at Manurewa Baptist Church in South Auckland and has a real passion for the discipleship of young people through both taught and experienced situations and he is particularly keen on seeing young adults better integrate their faith and life choices.
Sam is a Pastoral Leadership graduate from Carey, is currently finishing his Grad Dip in Business at AUT and hopes to begin work on a Masters of Theology from 2011. Sam is married to Laura and they have two young sons. Sam has helped to facilitate the Intermission Programme here at Carey and in 2011 he will take on the role of coordinating Intermission.

Brian joined the team Carey in 2004. He teaches various courses in our School of Applied Theology. Brian studied cross-cultural counselling at UC Irvine, and received his M.Div at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Brian has been a Pastor of Youth and Family for over 15 years, and has a passion for Jesus, relevant evangelism and the Church. Brian is currently working on his D.Min through Fuller Seminary in Missional Church Leadership. He is married to Denise and they have one son and two daughters. He enjoys movies, basketball, tennis, squash, and any kind of skiing.

Frances joined the Carey staff in May 2004. She provides overall administrative support to the Chinese Programme and assists the Director in its development. Frances came to New Zealand in 1991 and she can communicate in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. She enjoys music, tramping, swimming, giving support to people and smiling.

Chris joined the college in 2007 and has the oversight of the facilities management aspects of the college.
Chris and her husband John co-pastored churches on the West Coast of the South Island and at Motueka. She spent 7 years in Brisbane, Australia as registrar and Parent Liaison Officer at a larger private college.
Chris brings to Carey a broad experience which includes a nursing, educational and social work background.
As well as having three adult children and two grandchildren, Chris and John manage a large foster home at the Dingwall Estate in Papatoetoe.
Chris loves interacting with people from all works of life, checking out the latest movie and painting.

Andrew co-ordinates Field Education and teaches in Applied Theology. Prior to joining Carey in 2010, Andrew worked at Laidlaw College as Director of Community Life and Napier Baptist Church as Senior Pastor. Andrew has had experience pastoring, coordinating internships, and teaching preaching. He has published articles on Baptist ecclesiology and history and is currently embarking on PhD studies in theology and culture. Andrew is the Co-President of New Zealand Baptist Research Society and is on the Editorial Panel of The Pacific Journal of Baptist Research. Andrew is married to Margaret and they have two lovely daughters. Andrew enjoys all sport (especially cricket) and continues to fool himself that he is young enough to play it.

Lidy works mainly at the front desk (three days a week) with administration tasks and does a bit of all sorts – not licorice though. The other two are spent assisting with Carey’s distance programme. Prior to working at Carey she worked for an accounting firm in Apeldoorn, Holland which is where she was born. Her interests include swimming, badminton, walking, film and reading.

For fifteen years Brian Smith was a missionary in northeast India, where he taught theology and was involved in a translation of the New Testament into a tribal language. In 1976 he joined the staff of the New Zealand Baptist Theological College (now called Carey Baptist College), becoming Principal in 1984. Since retiring six years ago Brian has taken the opportunity to pursue long simmering ideas about the connection between economics and faith in Jesus and a whole lot more...

Graeme has the oversight of all the administrative aspects of the college, including the financial and property management.
After completing a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Massey University he left a senior management role in a corporate organisation and before coming to Carey he worked as the Executive Officer for Te Aroha Noa Community Services, a family focused social services organisation based in Highbury, Palmerston North and also as the Business Manager of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle Church. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance.
Graeme has been married to Ann for 35 years, they have, a son, two daughters, and four grandchildren. He enjoys running, swimming and riding his Harley Davidson motor cycle.

Damir came to the Carey Library four years ago, having completed a Masters of Library & Information studies programme. He is responsible for the overall administration of the journals as well as for the indexing of the NZ journal of history, plus shares responsibilities for other library housekeeping and administrative duties. John is a graduate of Carey and was the pastor at Milford Baptist Church in Auckland for six years from 2001-2006. In 2010 he completed his doctoral thesis in the history of Baptist engagement in public debate in New Zealand. As Director of Ministry training since 2010, John oversees the non-classroom and formational training of the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership students. He also lectures in preaching and spirituality. John is married to Lorraine. They have three young children.

George Wieland started teaching at Carey in 2000, after cross-cultural mission in Brazil, a pioneer pastorate in the North of England, and pastoring an inner-city church and community project in Edinburgh, with further study between pastorates leading to a PhD in New Testament. George teaches Biblical Studies, Mission and Cross-cultural Field Education. He is active in ministry in churches of various denominations around NZ and maintains an involvement in global mission as a member of NZ BMS’s mission council. Here in NZ George has a particular interest in the challenge of creating authentic intercultural community and partnership in ministry and mission. George is married to Jo who is a spiritual director and also works in the area of assessment and preparation for living and working interculturally. They have three adult children, Lindsey (married to Rich), a youth pastor in Christchurch, and twins Jonathan and Joanne, studying at Auckland University. George tries to preserve an illusion of fitness by running and going to the gym, and he enjoys playing guitar and piano.

Merrilyn came into youth ministry from a secondary teaching background, and has been involved in fulltime youth work for over 20 years. She has worked at local, regional and national levels in Baptist Youth Ministries over that time and is currently the National Youth Consultant for the Baptist Union of NZ. Merrilyn is passionate about seeing young people reached, trained and empowered for the Kingdom of God. She is committed to working with young people, and those who lead them, and is involved in a wide variety of youth ministry events - training, consulting, camping, personal development, and discipling. Merrilyn works for the YouthTRAIN Trust lecturing, running training seminars and providing support and counsel to youth leaders.
