Tentmaking

Purpose
To provide a survey of the biblical roots, history and nature of tentmaking in mission and introduce tools for analysing the skills required in preparation, placement, strategy and relationships for those planning to engage in the tentmaking world.

Tentmaking, the practice of mission across cultures from the base of a secular occupation or career, is a major strategy for mission in today’s world. This course equips people who are going to work across cultures in this manner to do so with integrity and impact.

Prerequisite: 30 credits in Bible & Theology OR Permission of Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Restriction: MM783 (offered at level 6 and 7)

The biblical roots, history and nature of tentmaking today, including questions of name and definition.

The tentmaker profile: a guide to the qualities required and the preparation needed.

Types of tentmakers and the processes involved in finding a placement.

Strategies and methods used in tentmaking.

Building strong relationships with family, church, mission and host peoples.
