Marketplace Christianity

This course aims to introduce students to the key themes and issues collectively described in popular terms as “marketplace” Christianity and in more specific terms, covering questions of vocation, theology of work, relationship of faith to daily life and ethical issues arising in these settings.

How do we live Christianly from Monday to Saturday, in locations other than home or church? This course explores a theology of work, work ethics, career choice, the notion of laity and the way in which ‘church’ becomes a far wider concept when it encounters the marketplace.

Prerequisite: 30 credits in Bible & Theology OR Permission of Dean of Undergraduate Studies .

Restriction: MM774 (offered at both level 6 and 7)

Content outline
The concept of “marketplace” Christianity including:

Alternative titles.
Descriptions and parameters.
The chief theological and biblical roots of:
- the concept of call or vocation
- the concept of the laity
- the nature and purpose of work
- the relationship of work and mission

Questions surrounding career in relation to Christian faith.

An introduction to some ethical issues arising in workplace settings with examples of issues specific to particular types of work.

A brief analysis of the way “marketplace” issues relate to church life in a New Zealand setting.
