Do I have to be a full-time student at Carey?

Not at all. We are very aware that not everyone can or wants to study full-time. Our programmes are designed to provide options. Choose one course at a time or go full-time. Study on-site, by distance from your place anywhere in NZ (or overseas). Feel free to talk with us further about what may be best for you.

Can I do some distance, on-site and block study?

Absolutely. Our programmes of study are designed to be flexible and many students combine study options to suit their work and life schedules. Talk with the Dean or Registrar about how this might work best for you.

How does a block course operate?

Block courses are ideal for two reasons a) the lecturer may be a guest lecturer that is unable to spend a full semester on-site but can offer days at a time; b) participants in the course are often in full-time employment and they can take days off to attend rather than a full semester. Block courses cover the same amount of work as would take place over a semester, the difference being that the teaching component is intensified. The reading, learning and assessment components still take place over the course of the semester.

Block courses usually have one of two structures:

i)    a full five days (Monday-Friday)

ii)    2 blocks of 2-3 days held one-two months apart. Attendance is required at both blocks.

What does it cost to study?

Each year the cost of an individual course differs slightly. In 2010, the costs are as below:

Credit (onsite and distance):    $562 per course so a one year full-time programme costs ~$4500.

Audit course (no assessments) $260.

International students costs      $1500/course

There is also a student services fee of $25 per course and the ID card is a $20 one off. Usual fees apply for areas such as change of enrolment, late enrolment, transcripts, cross-crediting, resubmission etc. The Student Association also has a $25 optional subscription fee.

Can I cross-credit study from others academic institutions?

This may be possible but you will need to discuss this with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Does Carey provide accommodation?

Unfortunately no as we are a non-residential college. However we usually have a number of advertisements on our noticeboard on houses for rent/flatmates wanted on behalf of others.
