Certificate of Christian Studies

(Cert.CS) - 60 credits – (Not NZQA Accredited)


Carey’s Certificate of Christian Studies provides a programme for people desiring an initial theological qualification, those pursuing study for personal interest, or for those studying part-time desiring an obtainable qualification that can be upgraded in the future. The programme provides maximum flexibility for study in terms of duration and place of study.

Programme Objectives

The programme produces graduates who have one or more of the following:

•    Understand the core tools of theology that are used to evaluate other disciplines and their own experience.

•    Develop the skills to handle documents of Christian faith.

•    Have a developing self-awareness of their spiritual journey.

•    Have developed practical skills for ministry

•    Integrate learning in determining personal action.

Requirements for the Certificate

A student enrolled in the Certificate of Christian Studies will follow a course of study equivalent to not less than 60 credits of study. Students may select courses of interest but all normal entry and prerequisite requirements must be met.

Accreditation for the Certificate of Christian Studies

The Certificate of Christian Studies is offered for those studying for personal interest or on a part-time basis. The qualification is not accredited by NZQA and students are not able to receive student loans and allowances when studying towards this qualification.

Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

A number of courses have prerequisite or co-requisite requirements. Prerequisites ensure that students have the skills necessary to succeed at higher levels. Co-requisites ensure the level of complementarity necessary for learning. See the “Course Details Section” for specific information on these requirements.

Transfer from Other Programmes

Students who have completed courses at other institutions may be eligible for cross-credits or recognition of current competency. See “General Regulations and Procedures” Section for full details of credit recognition policies. The awarding of the Certificate will nonetheless depend on meeting the minimum requirements for the Certificate.

Transfer to Other Carey Programmes

Once students have completed the requirements of the Certificate of Christian Studies they may transfer all credits towards one of the other Carey programmes. Students are advised to discuss their course selection with the Academic Registrar or Dean of Undergraduate Studies when transferring to another programme.
