Carey’s Graduate Diploma of Applied Theology provides a programme for people who already have an existing undergraduate qualification desiring an initial theological qualification, those who have an existing undergraduate qualification studying for personal interest and/or part-time and those who have an existing undergraduate theological qualification wishing to gain entry in postgraduate theological study.
Programme Objectives
The programme produces graduates who:
• Use the core tools of theology to critique other disciplines and their own experience.
• Critically examine current practice, applying learning to new situations.
• Handle documents of Christian faith with discernment and scholarship.
• Have developed self-awareness in relation to their own spiritual journey.
• Listen to others’ views, and have a world perspective.
• Integrate learning in determining personal action.
Requirements for the Graduate Diploma
A student enrolled for the Graduate Diploma in Applied Theology will follow a course of study equivalent to one year of full-time study and gain 120 credits including:
• At least 75 credits must be completed at level 7 or above.
• The following courses must be completed
• MB521 Introduction to Christian Theology
• MB533 Understanding and Interpreting the Bible
Students studying towards the Graduate Diploma of Applied Theology must complete their studies within three years of commencing. Students wishing to study part time or for personal interest should enrol in the Certificate of Christian Studies and then transfer into the Graduate Diploma programme.
Requirements for the Bridging Graduate Diploma
A bridging programme is designed to allow graduates with non-theological degrees to enter Masters study programmes. The bridging programme requires study in prescribed subject areas and levels to ensure a firm foundation in Biblical and Theological studies. Completion of the bridging programme does not gain automatic entrance into Masters level study; students must meet all normal entry criteria.
A student enrolled in the Bridging Graduate Diploma in Applied Theology will follow a course of study equivalent to one year of full-time study and gain 120 credits including:
• At least 75 credits must be completed at level 7 or above including:
• Research papers (MB739, MB790, MB791, MM790)
• At least 15 credits in Bible at Level 7
• At least 15 credits in Theology at Level 7
• At least 30 credits in a postgraduate area of interest.
The following courses must also be completed
• MB521 Introduction to Christian Theology
• MB533 Understanding and Interpreting the Bible
Entry Requirements
Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Applied Theology is restricted to students who have completed a recognised undergraduate degree programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate level. Pre-requisites and Co-requisites
A number of courses have prerequisite or co-requisite requirements. Normal prerequisites and co-requisite requirements do not apply for Graduate Diploma students, but students may need to do extra study to ensure that they have the skills necessary to succeed at higher levels.
Transfer from Other Programmes
Students who have completed courses at other institutions may be eligible for cross-credits. See the “General Regulations and Procedures” section for full details of credit recognition policies. The awarding of the Graduate Diploma will nonetheless depend on meeting the minimum requirements for the Graduate Diploma.
