Carey’s Diploma of Applied Theology provides a programme for training people for participation in a wide range of ministry areas, furthering the mission of the church in our society and world.
Programme Objectives
The programme produces graduates who:
• Are able to use the core tools of theology to understand and evaluate other disciplines and their own experience.
• Can examine current practice, applying learning to a variety of contexts.
• Handle documents of Christian faith with wisdom and discernment.
• Have developed self-awareness in relation to their spiritual journey.
• Listen to others’ views, and have a world perspective.
• Can communicate across cultural boundaries.
• Have developed knowledge, attitudes, and skills to serve in a secular world.
• Integrate learning in determining personal action.
Requirements for the Diploma
A student enrolled for the Diploma of Applied Theology will follow a course of study equivalent to two full-time years and gain 240 credits including:
• Bible & Theology: 90 credits
• 45 credits of introductory courses:
• MB521 Introduction to Christian Theology;
• MB530 Introduction to the Bible;
• MB533 Understanding and Interpreting the Bible;
• at least 15 credits at level 6 or above.
• Mission & Ministry: 120 credits which must include:
- MS500 Christian Formation or MS6/705 Christian Spirituality
- MF501 Reflective Field Education
• Level 6 Courses: 90 credits at level 6 or above.
Entry Requirements
Admission to the Diploma of Applied Theology is open to full-time students and part-time students who have completed the Certificate of Christian Studies. See the “Admission Regulations” for full details.
Chinese Language Option
The Diploma of Applied Theology is also delivered to students in Chinese. The Chinese Diploma of Applied Theology is approved by NZQA. Please contact the Chinese programme administrator for details.
Pre-requisites and Co-requisites
A number of courses have prerequisite or co-requisite requirements. Prerequisites ensure that students have the skills necessary to succeed at higher levels. Co-requisites ensure the level of complementarity necessary for learning. See the “Course Details” section for specific information on these requirements.
Transfer from Other Programmes
Graduates of the Certificate in Applied Theology may transfer all credits received towards the Diploma of Applied Theology programme. Students who have completed courses at other institutions may be eligible for cross-credits or recognition of current competency. See “General Regulations and Procedures” section for full details of credit recognition policies. The awarding of the diploma will nonetheless depend on meeting the minimum requirements for the diploma.
