Carey’s Certificate of Applied Theology provides a programme for people desiring an initial theological qualification, those pursuing study for personal interest, or for those studying part-time desiring an obtainable qualification that can be upgraded in the future.
Programme Objectives
The programme produces graduates who:
• Understand the core tools of theology that are used to evaluate other disciplines and their own experience.
• Have the skills to handle documents of Christian faith.
• Have a developing self-awareness in relation to their spiritual journey.
• Have developed practical skills for ministry
• Integrate learning in determining personal action.
Requirements for the Certificate
A student enrolled for the Certificate in Applied Theology will follow a course of study equivalent to one year full-time and gain 120 credits including:
• At least 75 credits must be completed at level 5 or above.
• The following courses must be completed
• MB521 Introduction to Christian Theology OR MB421 Christian Worldview
• MB530 Introduction to the Bible
• MF501 Reflective Field Education 1
Students studying towards the Certificate of Applied Theology must complete their studies within three years of commencing. Students wishing to study part time or for personal interest should enrol in the Certificate of Christian Studies and then transfer into the Certificate of Applied Theology programme.
Entry Requirements
Admission to the Certificate in Applied Theology is open to full-time students and part-time students who have completed the Certificate of Christian Studies. See the “Admission Regulations” for full details.
Chinese Language Option
The Certificate of Applied Theology is also delivered to students in Chinese. The Chinese Certificate of Applied Theology is approved by NZQA. Please contact the Chinese programme administrator for details.
Pre-requisites and Co-requisites
A number of courses have prerequisite or co-requisite requirements. Prerequisites ensure that students have the skills necessary to succeed at higher levels. Co-requisites ensure the level of complementarity necessary for learning. See the “Course Details Section” for specific information on these requirements.
Transfer from Other Programmes
Students who have completed courses at other institutions may be eligible for cross-credits or recognition of current competency. See the “General Regulations and Procedures” Section for full details of credit recognition policies. The awarding of the Certificate will nonetheless depend on meeting the minimum requirements for the Certificate.
