The Curriculum Objectives
The School of Applied Theology and Mission (SATM) has the following goals:
- To provide tertiary education of international standard in biblical, theological and historical disciplines, based on original research and up-to date scholarship
- Through innovative methods in delivery and assessment, to train students in the application of theological scholarship to practical ministry in Aotearoa / New Zealand
- To provide a programme for training people for effective leadership and participation in ministry areas furthering the mission of the church in our society and world
- To serve the Baptist Churches of New Zealand in their ongoing educational requirement for mission.
Organisation and Structure
The School of Applied Theology and Mission programmes contains the following two strands:
Bible, Theology and Church History
This coherent body of knowledge with its underlying principles and concepts provides a core for the qualification. The skills of using the Biblical text are developed with rigour. Church history examines the ways in which the church – across the globe and through the centuries - has witnessed to Jesus. Theology papers bring together the truths of Scripture according to various themes and then use this as a basis for constructive critique of our thought and practice today.
Ministry and Mission
The Mission and Ministry section reflects the belief that application of learning is integral not just incidental. Application is practical as well as theoretical. Learning is grounded in the New Zealand experience, and goes beyond the classroom and the library. Fieldwork and Formation subjects within this strand reflect our commitment to authenticity in our students and integrity in practice that develops the whole person - being, knowing and doing. It works with experiential learning in the process of being and doing. The fieldwork tests and informs our learning.
Courses at NQF Levels 4-7 are offered within these two strands. An integrative element is also included in the form of a Thematic Integrative Seminar which integrates learning from across these strands. The progression is from broad-based knowledge to problem solving and research at the higher levels. An increasing degree of self directed work is expected at higher levels.
