Buckingham stayed on in N.Z. after a period of supply at the Hanover St church and subsequently met his wife, returned N.Z.B.M.S. missionary Miss Lillian Peters (see separate entry) at Nelson. From her he gained an increased zeal for the work of the Mission. He suffered from ill health which disrupted his ministry at Oamaru and again at Thames, leading to his retirement.
