MacLeod, , Angus Hamilton

1926- . Born in Edinburgh, MacLeod lived in New Zealand as a war-time evacuee, 1940-1946. After a pastorate at Whitley Bay, England 1954-1958; MacLeod returned to New Zealand in 1958 and was Pastor of Taupo 1958-62; Oxford Terrace (Christchurch) 1962-74; and Long Bay (Auckland) 1985-91. The latter pastorate was preceded by his serving as General Secretary of the National Council of Churches (1974-1984). With a strong academic background in history, MacLeod authored several local church centennial histories, co-authored a biography of J.J. North, wrote several articles for the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and edited the centennial histories of the Baptist Union (1982) and the Missionary Society (1985). He was also part-time lecturer in Baptist History and Principles and Modern Church History at Carey Baptist College, 1985-1996. He took a strong interest in public issues and in promoting ecumenical relationships. He was a regular contributor on New Zealand radio, 1962-1990, and conducted the first televised Baptist church service in New Zealand in 1964. Although MacLeod stood towards the more liberal end of the denomination, his irenic and able leadership led to his being Chairman of the Baptist Union Council, 1972-1987 and President of the Baptist Union 1969-1970.
