About Carey

Carey exists: to train people for the church and for the marketplace so as to enable them to serve and think and lead in a way that advances God’s mission in the world.

As we fulfil this role we are ignited by those twin sentences so often sourced to our namesake, William Carey: “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.”

These sentences breathe passion. There is a boldness here. An excitement. While they inspire, but they speak also of ‘great things’ to which to aspire. Life and service becomes an adventure.

These sentences spark mission. Always have, always will. First spoken on 30 May 1792 in a sermon by William Carey on Isaiah 54:2-3,  they have resounded down the decades and across the timezones wherever mission is a priority.

These sentences nurture vision. God-focused vision. The expecting comes before the attempting, the ‘from’ before the ‘for’. Confidence in God lays the foundation for obedience to God.

Carey has modern, spacious premises in Penrose, Auckland. The College is close to the Ellerslie-Panmure interchange on Auckland's Southern Motorway, and has ample on-site parking. The College complex includes lecture rooms, recreation facilities, a chapel and a well-stocked library with over 30,000 volumes.

Carey's History

Carey Baptist College belongs to the Baptist Churches of New Zealand. Carey contributes to the work and mission of these churches through the training of men and women as leaders with mission, vision and ministry skills.

Carey trains more than 300 people a year and is open to people of all denominations. Carey Baptist College was founded by the Baptist Churches of New Zealand at the 1924 Annual Assembly held in Christchurch.

While much is said today about the post-denominational era, Carey thrives on being accountable to a family of churches.  The Carey Board is elected by the Annual Assembly of the Baptist Churches. We believe this accountability to a specific group of churches ensures Carey remains a credible theological college which is able to resource the wider Christian community. In any given year approximately 50% of Carey’s enrolled students come from other communities.
