The training for the youth pastor programme takes place within five components:
1. KNOW
Knowing the Bible is a crucial component of effective youth ministry. To fufill the requirements for the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership (Youth), a student is also required to complete the academic requirements of the Diploma of Applied Theology (NZQA accredited) and includes a number of YouthTRAIN courses.
2. GROW
A weekly pastoral theology class where experienced youth pastors share about the rigours of ministry. Plus this class covers practical subjects such as building teams, working with the senior pastor, discipleship, big events, handling conflict and time management. Plus weekly Preaching & Communication training and community worship.
3. BE
Knowing who you are is as important as what you know. We want to build leaders with a heart after Jesus and not just teach the skills and knowledge needed for youth work. Each student will be linked with a mentor to help develop character and passion to prepare you for the long haul in youth ministry.
4. GO
Practical experience each week within youth ministry settings with supervision by an experienced youth pastor. Plus a six week Summer ministry experience to continue that practical learning. This could involve any of the following: Summer Pastorate, Beach Mission, Overseas Mission, Camps, Special Projects, Work Experience. The goal of these placements is not only to develop ministry skills and gain hands-on experience, but also to integrate your ‘doing’ with your ‘knowing’.
5. SEE
Regular evaluation with the Director of Ministry Training, your Mentor and Supervisor, and other Carey staff, will encourage your development and allow you to discuss progress, learning outcomes and future needs.
