This school within Carey aims to meet the challenges of balancing classroom based study, spirituality and hands-on experience. The programmes uniquely combine three core strands of Christian training – Formation and Fieldwork, Bible, Theology and Church History, and Mission and Ministry. It offers certificate, diploma and degree level qualifications. The programmes include significant elements of fieldwork and practical learning experiences. It is ideal for those looking for a qualification that prepares them for practical Christian ministry and mission. Mission in the 21st century requires creative responses from Christians. Carey’s School of Applied Theology & Mission is a fresh vision for Christian training and aims to meet that challenge. Theological colleges have always struggled to balance theory, spirituality and hands-on experience. This School provides one way forward.
World-wide, innovative approaches to education are acknowledging the value of learning while doing. ‘Applied’ disciplines are increasingly recognised alongside more traditional approaches as complementary paths to knowledge and expertise. Since 1995 Carey has developed this ‘applied’ approach in what was its successful Diploma in Mission (now Diploma of Applied Theology). This was followed in 2002 with the introduction of the Bachelor of Applied Theology, and expanded in 2004 with the introduction of a one year Certificate and two post graduate qualifications, the Graduate Certificate and the Graduate Diploma.
