Admission to the Pastoral Leadership Training is restricted to those who have completed the pastoral leadership application forms (due by 30 September each year), interviews and selection panel. Normal entry requirements for the degree must also be met. The application process is outlined below:
Step 1 Talk
The personal stirrings of a call to pastoral leadership need to be tested and confirmed objectively and corporately.
Before applying for training make sure you,
- Discuss your plans with your pastor and/or your church leadership team. Are they supportive of what you want to do?
- Discuss your plans with either Carey’s Principal or the Director of Ministry Training.
Step 2 Apply
You need to take the time to complete the application forms. Note that this can be a lengthy process so please complete as soon as you are able. The following forms must be completed:
- Application Form (including the short autobiographical essay)
- Self-Assessment Form
- Pastor Reference Form
- Church Support Form
- Referee Form (x2)
- Spouse Form (if applicable)
- Psychological Assessment Consent Form
Step 3 Psychological Test
This confidential assessment is to obtain insight into your general psychological and cognitive functioning to aid in the selection process and in our training. The interview covers areas relating to the candidate’s psychological history, their social history and general functioning.
Step 4 Interview
Once the Application Forms and Psychological Test have been completed a panel is assembled to discuss with you your suitability for pastoral leadership. The panel usually comprises of The Director of Ministry Training, your pastor, a denominational leader, a Carey staff member, and an independent person. If you are married it is important that your spouse attend. The interview usually lasts for about 40 minutes and you will be asked questions about leadership experience and sense of call to pastoral leadership. Please note the discussion is relaxed and the panel will be supportive of you.
Step 5 Board Approval
The Interview Panel then make a recommendation to Carey as to whether you should be accepted for the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership. The Chair of the College’s Board then meets with the Principal to make the final decision regarding your acceptance into the programme.
Step 6 Letter of Confirmation
As soon as a decision is made you will be notified in writing.
