The six main components of the Diploma of Pastoral leadership are outlined below:

1. Academic
Students normally undertake a Bachelor of Applied Theology while completing the Diploma of Pastoral Leadership. Pastoral Leadership students are required to include the following papers within their Bachelor of Applied Theology:
- Introduction to Preaching
- Introduction to Pastoral Care
- Spiritual Leadership
- People of God
- Baptist Churches(on-site only)
2. Fieldwork
3. Mentorship
4. Evaluation
Evaluation is an important part of the training process and will be received from the Principal, the Director of Ministry Training, Carey staff, supervisors, mentors and peers, on a regular basis. Each year there are two significant evaluations. Firstly, a mid-year review with the Director of Ministry Training. Secondly, a more significant and robust review with the wider group of people involved in their training.
5. Pastoral Theology

This is a two-year course for students who have completed their academic requirements and have commenced working in a pastoral leadership position. MDC comprises of written assignments, an annual block course and retreat, and accountability through mentorship. If within the Baptist Denomination the student receives Baptist Union registration upon completion of MDC
